We can smell essential oils because they are volatile, meaning they evaporate at room temperature, and we breathe them in. Not all essential oils though are equally volatile – some evaporate quickly, others much slower. You might have heard essential oils referred as top, middle and base notes. This is determined on how quickly they evaporate, or how long the smell ‘lasts’.
